What the heck is going on? Bearing or CV Joint?

Ok, Time to revisit this. I had the cv joint rebuilt by a local guy
that does awesome work. I finally got the chance this evening to
throw it back in. (I will have to replace that ball joint in the near
future. Couldn't source one as of yet.) I took it around the block
again and Dog Gone if that noise isn't still there.

AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!

Quick! Why do I love this car? Oh yeah, Scirocco's are the awesome.

At this point I am guessing that I have been tricked to which bearing
I am hearing. I was pretty sure that my first diagnosis was correct
in that it was a bearing, but guessed it to be the wrong side. It was
a good thing I found that cv joint though, it was pretty messed up.
Looks like the rocc will be sitting for another week or so till I get
the time to do the other bearing.

Just to make sure, is there anything I could be missing here that
could be the culprit?

Symptoms:

Roaring noise that is consistent with momentum of vehicle. Pronounced
when load is removed from the drive line (coasting, no accelerating
forces applied to the drive line.) Noise diminishes once under load.
The noise is a roaring that seems to oscillate (trying best to
describe the noise.)

Particulars: 87 2.0L 16V Scirocco. New passenger side front bearing,
rebuilt passenger side inner and outer cv joints. Tires: Khumo 712's
with less than 5k miles. Sound appeared to be coming from right side.
Now not sure. Sound is still present. The old test of coasting down
a hill with the engine killed turning from side to side to hear the
offending bearing is not possible here. I live in Charleston, SC. We
have no hills... Lots of bridges, no hills.

Any ideas? I will change the driver's side front bearing when i get
the next chance to throw the car in the air and get some time under
there. Beyond that I am kinda stumped.

TIA,

Dave
