OT - b3 16v passat issues - the saga continues



so Rick Kellner gave me a deal on a rear fuel pump/filter/accumulator 
assembly (thanks rick!).

    today i did the swaparoo, then tested by blipping the fuel pump a few 
times. the pump did the typical thing being an empty system. it would spin 
fast during the first few key cycles, then start slowing over the next few 
key cycles as the system pressure builds. but in this case a leak started at 
the outlet of the filter. turned out the filter had been a tad chewed from 
old line install/removal, and was leaking from there.

    swapped on a spare filter, this time no leak at the outlet, but i 
noticed that while priming the system, the pump sounded as if it was 
building up pressure... alot of pressure. enough pressure to make the pump 
run very slowly after about 5 key cycles. on the 6th cycle, the side of the 
filter 'generated' a split and started leaking. thats odd, there was not 
even a scratch on that filter.

    this time i throw the brand new filter on (the one i was saving for 
after i verified all was ok). cycle the key a bunch of times, pump runs 
slower than i think it should be again. i rap on the FPR a few times, no 
effect. i figure what the heck and start it up. engine runs perfect, idles 
smooth, revs fine (no opportunity to test under load though). after about a 
minute of idling the rubber 3/8" line on the outlet of the filter 
'generates' a leak, spraying all over. i kill the engine, drop the jack, and 
call it quits for the night.

so... here is what i think is going on:

1. fuel return line is blocked (unlikely, as thats the least likely place to 
block, fuel has been filtered and passed through the entire fuel distributor 
assembly by then, return fuel is usually very clean).
2. FPR is siezed shut.

issue with #2:
will a CIS car really idle and rev correctly with a FPR that is siezed shut? 
i would have though the fuel pressure would be too high, and it would at 
least have a stumbly idle...

i (hopefully) will get the other fuel system bits from Rick, but if that 
falls through, i'll be begging others for fuel stuff.
