what kinda lube goes under the steering rack boots?

I noticed this when I did the rack boots on my mk1 jetta and not that I'm
about to tackle the same job on my mk2 jetta GTX (I appologize for the non
scirocco talk, but  I have to get this crap done before I can put the 81 S
in the garage) I was wondering what you guys use in there...its seems like
a mixture of axle grease or tranny fluid (but without the horrible gear
oil smell).
