you are very close indeed!!!  wrong war!  it was WW1,
and ammo came in 9 yd belts.  it took a lot of bullets
to take down a plane made mostly of empty space
covered with cloth... so... to do that, you had to:
give him the whole 9 yds of ammo. the pilots would
return, and report giving him the 'whole 9 yds' and it
stuck.
