Yeah, it is there for a good reason...

  Do a search for "Shrick baffled oil pan" and look at that.  That is even better, but not very practical for the street.  However, I recommend replacing that with a baffle from an A3 (93-98 Golf, Jetta).  It keeps the oil off the crank when you accelerate of the line.  It has an oil pan seal around its perimeter, so you can depend on it not leaking.  It should be about 65.00 at the DEALERship (that is THE correct spelling folks), and I am sure there are aftermarketers that prolly sell it cheaper (Potterfolks, Adirondack?)...
