I have questioned mechanics about it and they all shudder at the thought....I want it replaced and will do it myself. ALso, does anybody know what type of sending unit is inside the '87 16v tank? Is there just the in-tank full transfer pump? Or is there other things inside that can be swapped...or do I need new parts. Please let me know any info as this is one I am going to do myself against every trained mechanics advice!!

Have you checked out http://gastanks.com ? I see 199usd for a 84+
Scirocco tank. Hey, you can at least buy a new one.. I couldn't even
find a replacement carbureted car tank! You need to disconnect the
brake flex lines and drop the rear axle to get at the tank straps.
Not fun, but I can think of lots worse things to tackle on a Scirocco.
If the other stuff is good, just put it back the way you found it.
