That was quick!  ;)

The bad news is that it's definitely a hardware issue.

Now it's whether it's the drive itself or the IDE controller (although
I've never seen the other channel of an IDE controller work if one side
doesn't). My money is on the drive failing w/ the new information you've
supplied.
About the smaller drive electronics.....It might work, but it would be
better if you were able to get an exact match.
If you are able to score one and the logic board swap works I have 2
words:

Got burner?

CD's use an almost universal file system that is understood by everything.
DVD's (when storing information and not movies) use the same I beleive.

Dual format DVD burners (DVD+-RW) are going for less than $200 these days.
Sorry if this sounds uncaring or harsh, but backups should be performed
like Chicago voting:
