[SPAM] Tranny Selection

   Since I haven't got the cash to spend on getting a six speed, i'm gonna 
get a 5.  I'd prefer the cruising gear, although the fuel economy is an 
issue, it's more of a noise issue.  3000 rpm is quieter than 4, and on a 
6500 mile trip, that's what will probably get to me the most.




Things to take into account;

- Gear Ratios.

   Right now I'm thinking about a 2h, which is just like the 2y, but I think 
it is the 8 valve version, it was found in the 83 gti's(I was supposed to 
buy an 83 gti, but he sold it the day before I left town to buy it).  I'd 
like to take the .71 out of my FF and use it in whatever transaxle I get.

- Final Drive.

  I'm not too sure, I've messed around with the gear chart and the speed/rpm 
calculator, and I think i'd like a 4.25 final drive.  It'll hurt the rpms a 
little bit on the highway's, but I think it'd be worth it.

- HP/Torque range (not absolute numbers, but the _range_.)

I'm hoping for somewhere around 110-115HP and 130ish lb-ft.  Pat (ATS) was 
able to get 101whp and 120 wtq with his 3a setup.  I'm going to be bored out 
and stroked to 2.1L.  Hopefully a head that is going to be worked pretty 
nicely. I'd like to add the VWMS fuel distributor.  I have a TT downpipe and 
2 inch catback which will be used with the setup.  I'm either gonna retain 
my g-grind cam or go with a 272 or 276, not too sure what yet, but with all 
that, i'd like to see at least those numbers above, if i'm underestimating, 
I can only be happier, and I don't think those numbers are too hard to get, 
but time, or the list, will tell.


- Money.

   Money isn't a huge issue, I still live at home, I have an overall budget 
of probably $6000 for this car, I don't have $6000 grand right now, but in 
the next few months at Suncor I should make about $7500, so $1500 for the 
jetta, $6000 for the rocco, and I'll wear the same clothes 3 days a week.  
The $6000 has to pay for the engine, pay for a paint job, pay for the body 
work I can't do myself, and i'd like to buy some sway bars and tie bars.

- Intended Use(s).

  Car will be a summertime daily driver as well as autocross car.  Of course 
the trip from the West Coast to the East Coast and back to the West is a 
priority of mine as well.

Is a 2Y with a .71 5th what work with what I want?
