reverse issue with an 8v tranny--Grind prevention

I don't have any suggestions for your current problem, but there's an easy
way to prevent the dreaded into-reverse-grind-shift on any manual tranny:

At a complete standstill, before shifting into reverse, depress the clutch
and shift into another gear (For example, on VWs, I typically shift up into
third first), then back into neutral and let the clutch out, and then
drepress the clutch pedal again and shift into reverse as usual and you'll
NEVER get a grind.

I've never opened a tranny up and know nothing about the internals, but I've
used this in all the vehicles I've ever driven and I never get a grind.

Best thing is, it's easy to do and easy to make a part of your daily driving
habits.
