[UPDATE] on the MkI's I found...

Well, I talked to the guy who owns them and they are not for sale. They're mostly doners (parts), but he is planning to someday restore the S with the sunroof. Inside the garage, there were two more. One (dark green with yellow rims) had a very clean looking G60 in it and looked to be fun to drive. I talked to him for a while and it turns out that he rents bays from the owner of the garage and all he works on is VW's and the occasional BMW or Audi. He's "not chasing money," doesn't advertise, and apparently does it mainly because he loves VWs (mainly A1s). I think I found my mechanic.

Another reason I like him: he listens to classical music in the garage and works mainly at night ("Phone's not ringing all the time and there's no distractions. I can just get to work and get involved without interruptions.").

I truely believed him when he said he does it because he loves the cars, not for the money. Although I'm sure the money is good. He's pretty booked up and it looks like it's all loyal customers as opposed to the local shop where they work on everything and anything. In fact, he won't work on American cars.

I tried to sell the list as I think his expertise would be invaluable (not saying that there aren't people like that here already), but he mentioned Vortex and had that look of "it's more BS than I want to deal with" to which I replied: It ain't the Vortex (the list, that is).
