Legal options on gas tank recall

Kareem,
"Sympathetic" and "Dealer" don't not seem to work well together, perhaps you
should re-write that... :-)

You might find a dealership that might help you, but not really. They way
recalls work, VW gives the dealership a minimum of shop time to do the job,
less than what is required to do it right... The other thing is, they tend to
discount the cost of the part tremendously on an item they are covering by
warranty (recalls and warranties are both covered by VW for free, I mention
that because I am making a point).

To the point= do you want a dealer to fix your car if they are not making
any money on your car? By that I mean, if you ask a dealer to fix your car
and make little or no profit on it, three possible things will happen... 1),
they will find other things 'wrong' with your car to increase their sales, 2),
they will do the job, but do so in such a way as you will have to fix other
things that they damamged during their 'repair', or 3) BOTH...

Now while I do not discourage you from trying to do this, I do offer this to
help you consider things from all sides... If I were you, I would offer to
just -get- the tank from them, and offer to bring back the old one... They
may balk at you and say that they have to do it if it is warranty, but I would
reassure them that they could mark the original gas tank any way they chose so
they could be sure that you were not riping them off (this is what this
dealership would be worried about)...

This is just my reading on it... I wish you well in your quest...
