Megaspark, KS and Re: turboing an 8v

Shawn:
I was talking with a friend last night. He had just fired up his 2.0 8V now
with ITB's and Megasquirt for the first time. That by itself was pretty
awesome! (He mimmiced the Porsche Cayenne turbo commercial with the phone by
the exhaust!)
Anyway we got to talking about using KS ignition. For an NA engine the
ignition curve is pretty optimum and it provides good protection from
pinging. But, like I said, for a turbo engine it doesn't respond under boost
by retarding the ignition. Then I got to thinking that all Megaspark (or
Megasquirtnspark) does is intercept the signal from the Hall sender, wait
the appropriate amount of time based on the programmed inputs, then send the
signal to the ignition module which fires the coil. In this instance the
Megaspark is programmed for the basic advance curve with advance or retard
overlaid on that based on manifold vacuum or pressure.
So, what if the Megaspark gets the Hall signal, then sends the output to the
KS ignition which then triggers the ignition module? In this case the
programmed values in Megaspark would be corrections to the ignition map in
the KS ignition! So, the basic advance curve would all be zeros (no
correction needed) and the vacuum advance would be zero (again relying on
the KS fuel map), but the pressure retard would be how much timing you want
to pull out. So, you just "correct" the KS curve to retard under boost AND
you still have protection of the knock sensor ignition! Right off hand I
think it will work.

Check here:

for more info on the Mega-derivatives.

What cha think?
Dan
