Noooo!!! Possible SMS or clutch failure.

I wouldn't call it SMS just yet.
 
That metal cylinder on top of the pedal cluster where the clutch cable goes through and penetrates the firewall is _critical_ to its proper operation. I experienced this first hand when I installed rear discs on my cabby.
 
Go get a new pedal cluster from a yard, put it in and get back to us!  :)

Well, it happened today. After 2 years of faithful service, the 16V left me stranded. I pushed the clutch in and it snapped to the floor. I thought the cable snapped, but it was intact, although the mount through the firewall was ripped to pieces (?). Pulling the clutch back up did nothing.
