OT: 944 question (it's broken and its german!)

You guyses are the most knowledgeable german auto types I know, so 
maybe someone might shed some light on this one:

My buddy has an 87 944 turbo,

when he starts it up, it'll sometimes stall, or try to kill itself, it 
will then idle hunt up to about 2500 RPMs, and dig down to almost 
stalling out, the fluctuations will get smaller until it evens out. It 
also does it when he comes to a stop... Anybody have any ideas?
