rear wiper function

I'm going to try to fix my rear wiper, but I don't know how the stalk
works.  When you push the stalk forward, I thought that the wiper would
turn on in a intermittent fashion.  Is that correct?  When I hold it
forward, I can hear the rear washer pump motor run so I think I just
need to put in the extra wiper motor that I have.
