can "bad gas" throw warning lights? (ot)

2 weeks ago i nearly ran out of gas and was forced to stop at a bp to fill
up. after filling the tank the check engine light on my car came on and
stayed on for a week. on my next fill up i went back to my normal fill up at
marathon. after the fill up of marathon gas my check engine light has not
come on at all. so it got me thinking, and today when i stopped for gas i
went to bp and threw in $3 worth on a empty tank. sure enough the check
engine light came on about a mile down the road. is it possible that crappy
bp gas is causing this or is it more likely just a coincidence?
