Diagnose: severe clunking

All this clunking. I have it too, but I have the bump-clunk type. Only
large bumps where my suspension gets unweighted.

I remember a long time ago I read a website with a tip on how to shave down
the spacer rings in the upper strut mounts. It would supposedly get rid of
a common 'clunk'. I just put brand new strut bearings in, and I now have
the clunk. The spacer stops the bearings from getting crushed while you
torque down the strut nut. They are supposed to be just the right height to
not clunk but allow for smooth steering. I guess sometimes the spacer is
just a little too tall, and just needs to be shaved down a tiny amount to
allow the bearing to be a little bit tighter.

Maybe something to look into? You could try to jack it up, take the wheel
off, and wiggle the strut around to see if it clunks. As a matter of fact, I
just might look into that tomorrow!
