Tire Inflation: Proper PSI to run?

You definititely do NOT want to run at the max inflation pressure of the
tire. If you drive for an extended period of time the tire will get hotter
and the pressure will go up exceeding the max rating.
For street use I try to run at a pressure that gives me even tire wear
across the tread, which usually works out to ~28 psi. Works for 175/70 x 13,
185/60 x 14 and 205/40 x 16. Plus no sense making the ride harsher for a 1%
performance gain on the street.
For autocross or track use, obviously, the pressure should be set higher to
limit sidewall deformation under lateral load.

Subject: Tire Inflation: Proper PSI to run?

Ok, how do I know what PSI to run on a car? Should I go by what the max
psi rating is on the sidewall of the tire? Somebody on vortex said to
always go by what the car manual says but this doesn't make sense if I'm
running after market wheels and tires. Once, at discount tire the guy
told me that the kuhmo 712's on my scirocco had a lower load capacity
than stock so they should be running a higher psi, also the goodyears
gsd3's on my bmw says they have a max psi of 51. I've always just run
around 32psi but should I be doing something different to determine the
proper psi?
