(Very Long Rant)Worst Day Ever - Help me identify what happened to my car

fuel pump? sounds like what mine was doing when my trnasfer ppump went bad. 
of course on an '82 i don't think you have a transfer pump, but i'd check 
your main pump. did it buzz or make a whining noise when this started 
happening?
