Shift Pattern Messed up

Hey, I have a problem, I was driving my Scirocco today when all of a sudden 
the H pattern for my shifter messed up.  now I have to "search" for my 
gears, rather than it being a positive slot to slide into. The car is still 
drivable, but its hard to find first & second.
If anybody has any suggestions as to what it could be, please write back
