Rob,
You can pick up the shims at your local VW dealer. I
realize they are twice as much at the dealer ($5) but you may only need
a few of them. Then there is no need to put it all back together and
apart again. Also, if you are taking out the cam check Bentley for the
order in which you remove the bearing caps. Do not mix up the bearing
caps or reverse them. Again, Bentley has a pretty good description.
Also it's a good time to put in a G-cam if you have opened up the
exhaust and a G60 valve cover gasket.
Rick Kellner.

I just checked the valve clearances on my '83, some are as much as .20mm
off! I don't have the special valve adjustment tools and can't afford
them now, can I just take the cam off, check the discs, put it all back
together and then order the right discs?(eventually repeating the
process when the discs arrive). The only reason I'm having second
thoughts about this is because Poor Richards "how to keep your Rabbit
Alive" book says if you don't have the special tools, have the dealer do
it! And usually that book is good about telling you whether you can do
something without special tools... thanks-
Rob
