Desperation... any more ideas (16V problems)?

The FI can limp if the DPR isn't getting a signal, either if the computer
gives up or you just unplug it.  But the knock box also has a fault mode
where it retards the heck out of the timing resulting in Instant Suck.
Unplugging the vacuum line and plugging it back in with the car running will
do it on my 'roc.

The knock-sensing ignition in the 16v seems to be an enigma to pretty much
everyone.  How it relates to the basic VW electronic ignition is certainly a
mystery to me!
