Was stupid mk1 question. -Now Engine Building

The surest way to more power is more displacement.  Shortening the =
stroke would be counter-productive since that would decrease =
displacement.=20
The only benefit of shortening the stroke of an engine is a decrease in =
piston speed. This may be a factor if you have changed cams, ports, =
valve springs, etc. to the point where your rpm's are limited only by =
excessive piston speed.  Believe me, none of our VW's engines fall into =
this category.
 Bore it AND stroke it, that way you have more low end power AND more =
top end power.  That's the beauty of a larger engine.

  The object of my build is an engine that performs well on both ends of =
the
  tach. I can dream right? As I understand it, if I shorten the stroke a
  little, and increase the bore a little, it will increase top end =
performance
  without a significant loss of compression. If you build an engine with =
less
  low end torque, will the Audi 4k manifold- believed to help low end =
torque-
  work to compensate for the low end loss, or will it conspire against =
the
  engine, and just rob too much top end power? I will be starting with =
the RD
  block, solid lifter head, and G grind, buckled to the FF (probably) =
gearbox.
