Cooking oil Deisel

We're actually talking about two different animals here.

Biodiesel is a manufactured diesel fuel substitute, made through a
chemical process from a vegetable oil stock (soy, canola etc.) It can be
burned at 100% in place of petroleum diesel in most vehicles. Because of
the nature of the oil, it may be hard on some pump older seals, causing
them to leak, but they can be replaced easily with newer seals.
Biodiesel has very low toxic emissions, making it attractive in Europe,
and it is gaining in popularity here.

Vegetable oil can be burned in a diesel engine provided it is heated to
68-70C. Sites like greasecar and veggievan sell kits for converting your
passenger car diesel to dual fuel. Two tanks are required, plus a cutover
system and a heater for the fuel. Older, less complex systems use an
engine coolant heat exchanger to heat the fuel (copper tubing wrapped
around an adapter that goes in the upper rad hose usually.) Newer systesm
use 12V fuel heaters which are available commercially. The system has to
be plumbed so that the starting fuel (diesel) is not contaminated with the
running fuel (vegetable oil.) People who use this system usually purchase
used fryer oil and strain and filter it to remove impurities. Vegetable
oil also has lower emissions, and the exhaust smells like french fries...
