shift points for older engines]



A proper air fuel ratio will burn fast. Not fast enough to ignite it at TDC
and have the full use of the burn. Therefore we need to anticipate when the
burn will be needed. This is why timing is BTDC (before top dead center).

It's a balancing act, Too much advance and the engine will knock and produce
HC (unburned fuel) Not enough advance and the engine will run hot and
produce NOx.
