S1 bumper mods

I want to shorten the part of the bumper covers that wraps around the body at the ends of the bumpers, so I can shorten the distance these benches stick out. This is on a 79 with US bumpers. Any suggestions on how this might be done? 
I am also test fitting the bumper skins from my 79 on some GTi aluminum bumpers to lose some extra weight. Will get some pics when and if it works out. TIA  Jeff
