hub centric?

"Hub centric" means that an ID on the wheel locates to some OD on the
hub. The lugs are just there to hold it all together.

"Lug Centric" means that the lugs do both chores - locating the wheel
and holding it on.

You *can* locate a lug-centric wheel on your car - just be careful that
you sorta gradually tighten the lugs and wobble the wheel so that it is
apparent that the lugs are sitting nicely in the wheel. If you get it
wrong, the wheel will bounce around crazily. As if it were waaayyy out
of balance, which it would be. Your studs should be helping you here,
a little bit, by making it easier to mount the wheel. (but the studs
don't have anything to do with lug- vs. hub- centric).

If you haven't felt that, chances are the PO was doing nothing harmful.

To be on the safe side, get the rings, which adapt a wheel to being
hub-centric.
