Also I wonder what are the options on not having a torque
     wrench, I
don't own one yet. I seem to remember that you can do it by
     turns,
(including fractions of turns) instead, if you are careful.

Each bolt gets 60N-M or 43ft-lb, then an additional 1/2
     turn. Mark the
bolt heads with a sharpie after you get them (gradually, first
     torque
should be 40 or so) all to 60N-M so you know exactly where 1/2
     turn is.
Bentley says you can go this 1/2 turn in two steps, makes
     sense since
you're stretching the bolt during this step.

     ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TB,

Your partially correct. In one of my Bentleys (80-82), you
need to tighten the head in four steps. First you go through
the tightening sequence at 30 ft lb, then a second time at 44
ft lb, then a third time at 55 ft lb. The last time you use a
breaker bar and you make a precise 1/4 turn "with no
     hesitation in the bolt's movement".
Bottom line I wouldn't do this without a torque wrench. If
you need one I have several. Let me know when and we'll try
to connect. For that matter, pick a weekend and if I'm free
I'll come over and help. Tightening a head won't take too
     long.

     ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dick-You
are quite correct....as far as you go. My Bentley (LPV 800
     104) recommends exactly the procedure you outlined...IF your
head bolts are the six-point socket head type. If your head
bolts are of the 12 point type, the procedure is somewhat
different. Who knows which type the man
     has?Larry-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, as it turns out I have no idea what heads the bolts will
have, I'm getting some tomorrow. I am prepared for them to be
triple square heads just like the ones I have always seen and
have taken off the donor motor. No APR stuff, just OEM or a
     bit better.

So, I'm dealing with an RD motor in my Scirocco (see? On
Topic) and it is an 8v. I have a new gasket, a newly machined
head from another RD motor, as well as the cam caps that were
on _that_ 'new' head. (Had to go back for them, I'm an idiot
     sometimes.

I'm hoping to drive to Mark's in the Roc for the clutch
install project as this is the only thing wrong with the
'ting. Otherwise I'll be floating in the maroon 4 door sedan
which shall not have it's name spoken out loud.
