Note what Dave says is true for most bimmer engines but not the E30M3 being
discussed in particular.

That car (along with the 6-cylinder M5 and M6) uses shim-over-bucket style
adjusters instead of the eccentric rocker tip. You need to use a
valve-depressor and have a stack of shims ready in case you need to make a
change.

Also note that E36M3s and E39 M5s have hydraulic lifters and avoid this
hassle entirely.
