clutch cable streching?

I've had this problem many years ago and practically forgot about it. The
last time I put in a new clutch cable, I couldn't get the plastic adjuster
tube to extend long enough to take out the slack. What I ended up doing is
stacking several large washers under the plastic disk. This effectively
pulls the entire cable assembly away from the tranny lever and takes out the
slack. To install the washers, you must disconnect the end of the cable from
the clutch lever and thread it through the number of washers of you choosing.
The stack of washers now rest on the aluminum "ear" where the adjusting disk
used to sit. I used metal washers as opposed to any kind of plastic so as
not to have any compression issues.

OK then from reading the bentely the way you adjust the clutch cabel is that
you unscrew the locking nut, and then turn the adjusting disk until there is
only 6 mm from where the clutch lever hits resistance and where it get's
caught by the cable. Mine has about a cm of play between the cable and
resistance, but like I said the adjusting disc/screw part is just barely
threaded into the plastic cylinder piece along the cable.
