To be polite, your buddy is full of **it!
The distance from the crank main bearing centerline to the top of the =
block is going to be roughly equal to half the stroke+the rod length+the =
piston pin height. (and once again) If you can't visualize this you =
shouldn't be messing around with basic engine components!
The ABA rod is 159mm, while the JH rod is 144. ABA stroke is 92.8 while =
JH is 86.4. Piston pin height of the ABA is 2.2mm less than the JH. NET? =
The ABA piston, rod, crank combination will stick out of the top of the =
JH block by 16mm!
Why did you think VW made the block taller? So the piston would be 16mm =
down the bore and the engine would have a 4:1 CR?
I'm also curious why you would think that welding a couple downpipes =
could ever be more work than building a short block?
Personally, I'd bore the block for some Chevy SB pistons. That seems =
easiest to me. ;^)

A buddy of mine said that he's been putting ABA cranks, connecting =
rods and pistions into bored out JH blocks. Is this really possible? =
I'd much rather do this than mess with an exhaust amnifold that needs to =
be 15mm higher. That and I have one of both engines on my garage floor =
right now.
