The very first thing you should do is get the book "Maximum Boost" by turbo guru Corkey Bell. It'll teach you the ins and out of forced induction.
I, too, probably have to go the 1.8t route (though $$$$) because here in smoggy, errrr, sunny California it's illegial to modify your injection such
