getting close



Seems unlikely, but are you sure the idle mixture isn't way off?
I've found that you can "grab" the metering plate by inserting a 3mm
allen wrench and putting enough torque on it so it sticks in the screw,
but not enough torque to actually turn the screw. Then with the engine
running you can pull the plate up or push it down to vary the mixture.
It's a pretty quick way to find out which way the mixture needs to go if
you're out of the ball park.
