paranoid of the dreaded cross-member

I'm assuming the "cross-member" is part #2 in this pic (see 88Jetta post =
4:51am):

Could failure of this mimic a failed rear motor mount (downpipe banging =
during low-gear hard acceleration)? I've had this problem since I bought =
the car and told it was just the mount...Can they be replaced? I =
remember some listers have tried repair through welding but with limited =
success. Now I'm beginning to wonder if I should buy an intact one (if =
possible) for when I do my swap (just in case)...Any thoughts?
