what's a bad water pump bearing sound like?

Silly rabbit did not replace the water pump when he rebuilt the engine.

I did the old garden hose to the ear trick and pinpointed it to somewhere in 
that area.  I thought it was the idler pulley, but I replaced it.  But I 
still got a nice knocking noise coming from that area.  It felt like it had 
some play in it, but I have no way of knowing what's normal.  No leakage 
though...(?)

Anyone wanna place bets before I pull off the belt or replace it outright?
