my battery exploded?

<html><div style='background-color:'><DIV>
<P>here's the thing though. the battery wasn't holding any kind of charge what so ever. you could jump start the car, let it run for an hour, and then turn it off. after turning it off it would not restart, it had to be jumped all over again. that's why i think somebody must have done something, maybe stick it on the battery charger too long or even jump it with the wires backwards?<BR><BR></P></DIV>

<DIV></DIV>&gt;Not sure if a battery would explode sitting, maybe someone else on the list
<DIV></DIV>&gt;will chime in.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;BUT, I have seen a battery do that when it is over charged. If it is
<DIV></DIV>&gt;overcharged for too long the pressure from the gas, hydrogen I believe it
<DIV></DIV>&gt;makes, ends up splitting the battery case (especially the new sealed ones)
<DIV></DIV>&gt;and sends battery acid all over the place.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Is your alternator overcharging the system? Happens if the regulator goes on
<DIV></DIV>&gt;it. I have seen alternators put out 20V. Batteries don't like that :)
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Just a thought.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;evils been having some charging problems, figured it was the battery since
<DIV></DIV>&gt;it has a 6 month old alternator. the other day i jumped evil to get her
<DIV></DIV>&gt;started and let her run for a while just to keep everything going. pulled
<DIV></DIV>&gt;her back in and let her sit for a couple of days. tonight when i went down
<DIV></DIV>&gt;to the shop, i popped evil's hood to check some things out, when i popped
<DIV></DIV>&gt;the hood i got a great big wiff of battery acid. apparently some time in the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;last two days the battery exploded and dumped all the acid out of it. it was
<DIV></DIV>&gt;fine when i put it away, so how the hell could this happen? i suspect that
<DIV></DIV>&gt;one of my "shopmates" did something funky to my battery and doesn't want to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;own to it, but before i go accusing friends of stuff i'd like to check with
<DIV></DIV>&gt;all of you and see what you think. can a battery just explode sitting there
<DIV></DIV>&gt;when the car has been turned off for a while? i never heard of such thing
<DIV></DIV>&gt;happening before.
