in short, no it cant. the only short possible is if the lead causes a bridge between 2 of the plates. this is only a small bridge and a small current comes from the single shorted cell. the bridge is quickly 'zapped' and is instantly no longer a short. The only way to get that much current out of a battery is a short from one end to the other (only possible via the externat posts). I'm thinking one of your 'buddies' tried to jump the thing and got the leads backwards. That must have made one helluva light show. Check all of their drawers, the one with poop in it is the guy who did it, heh.

  Subject: my battery exploded?

evils been having some charging problems, figured it was the battery since it has a 6 month old alternator. the other day i jumped evil to get her started and let her run for a while just to keep everything going. pulled her back in and let her sit for a couple of days. tonight when i went down to the shop, i popped evil's hood to check some things out, when i popped the hood i got a great big wiff of battery acid. apparently some time in the last two days the battery exploded and dumped all the acid out of it. it was fine when i put it away, so how the hell could this happen? i suspect that one of my "shopmates" did something funky to my battery and doesn't want to own to it, but before i go accusing friends of stuff i'd like to check with all of you and see what you think. can a battery just explode sitting there when the car has been turned off for a while? i never heard of such thing happening before.
