Ball joint?

I wrote earlier about a jerking/shimmying of my steering wheel and the =
front shaking on my 85 Scirocco.  I have jacked up the front end and =
found that the inside of both front tires are wearing uneven and =
ruining.  Also, the ball joint on the driver side is moving back and =
forth quite disturbingly.  Is the ball joint causing the wear on the =
tires?  It has to be causing the shaking; right?  Thanks for the help!
