delinquent online sellers

I have the same concerns.
 I will shortly be sending a check to a guy I don't know in Florida for an
outboard motor.  I'm wondering if my $1200 will disappear into a black hole
and if it does, how I can go about retrieving it.
What do you all say about "recourse"?
