16v timing



Hello all, Can anyone tell me the sure way of timming a 16v. My book says to 
time it similar to an 8v except the cam mark is on the valve cover and the 
input shaft has no mark. What I find odd is that when the timming marks on 
my fly-wheel are visable, the crank pully mark is pointing down (6 o'clock), 
and yet the #1 is right at TDC. It will start and run like this, although 
not all that well. Thanks for all your advice. Elijah
