There's a couple ways to remove it. I get to do alot of rear main seals
and ive found that the quickest/fastest/safest way to do it is to use a
dent puller. There's enough meaty metal to take a center punch, score
your intended target (center mass) and follow up with the insertion of
the dent puller. tap-tap and its out.
OR
You can use a seal puller. Just be careful to not score the seal housing
or the crank.
OR
remove the housing and drive it out. Just be sure to use a sharp blade to
separate the oil pan gasket from the housing.
AND/OR
Replace the entire housing with a new A4 (Just like what's on the 1.8T's.
I have one in my 84 and its trick.) style rear main seal. Comes with the
seal already installed and has a nifty seal built into the housing.

Use the old one to drive in the new one of you don't have a seal driver.
Just be careful and take your time. Flip it over backwards on top of the
new one and drive it in.
