I'm not a bumper snob, but . . .

In a serious accident, I don't think the bumpers will
make any difference - they will just move with the
"crumple" zone. The main advantage of the so-called 5
mph bumpers is in parking lots . . .

BTW, I've been rear-ended three times in a Scirocco
over my illustrious career  :0

Some models in Europe came with "US Style" headlights,
like the MK2 Scirocco GTi (which lasted only a few
years before being replaced in the line up by the
Scirocco GTX (8V and 16V). So "US style" headlights
are not that weird in Europe . . .

To me it's a matter of taste - go with what YOU like,
not with the "consensus"
