Of course, heed T-Berk's suggestion and test the voltage.  But everything 
(in my experience) is pointing to a bad alternator.

That won't do anything about the valve tap you're hearing (and neither will 
high-octane gas) -- are you sure that's what you're hearing?  Or could it 
be bad alternator bearings tapping around?
