Re: Need sugestions if I should repair my 84 or get a new car(long)

Yes, but...

Honda parts (from the dealership) are ridiculously expensive, but then how
many of you Scirocco guys go to Bob's VW and not the Potter people?

One big difference is that there are aftermarket and wholesale places to get
repair parts for a VW. Try finding a shop that sells Honda repair parts. Of
course there is a plethora of sources for TypeR stickers...

On the other hand, the fact is that Honda's don't need those expensive parts
very often. That's why they keep their value so well.

VW's (and most European cars) require periodic attention to remain in
roadworthy condition. A difference in philosophy of automotive purpose and
design. With regular care and feeding a VW will last 500K miles. A Japanese
car will typically go completely free of any maintenance for 125-150K miles,
but after then you have a car you can't keep fixed no matter how much time
and parts you throw at it. They're junk to be crushed. Look at how many old
Volvos and Beetles are still on the road. How many 70's Accords or Celicas
are still rolling?

Ultimately it comes down to how you view the life cycle of a car - does it
have a finite lifecycle or is an enduring part of your life? All my cars
have names...
