RE: transmission problem!!

Lee- at this point you know more about the failure than any of us, so all
we can offer is conjecture and speculation. That being said, here's my
speculation, based on the assumption that the black, viscous fluid is trans
lube: busted trans case allowed fluid to get onto clutch disc.
Another possibility is that the rear main seal (engine) failed, allowing
motor oil onto the clutch. How's your engine oil level?
Cost: engine seal: not much
      busted trans case: much

Sorry. Hope it's the seal... Guess this means the solid state headlight
control design is on hold, huh?

Well, at first I had thought my clutch had just blown, but now as I
look at the ever widening pool of liquid forming under my car, I
don't think that was the problem. The fluid is viscous and very
black, and smells like burnt clutch, and appears to be leaking out of
the seam between the transmission case and gear carrier, but it might
be coming from higher up, and just collecting there before dripping
down. I have not had a chance to jack it up and check where the leak
is for sure.

Exactly what happened, was I was driving my car, and just as I was
turning on to my street, I felt what I can only describe as a couple
of pops in my acceleration, kind of like if I had hit some small
objects in the road, except there were no objects. After that, I
barely got any traction from the clutch. The car drove like the
clutch was only a third of the way in, and there was an awful burning
smell. I parked the car in my parking lot, got out, and went inside.
As I was walking my dog, I noticed a trail of fluid running down my
street, and sure enough tracked it back to my car, where a good sized
pool was forming under the transmission.

Anyone know what happened? What am I going to need to replace, and is
it going to cost me my first born child?

The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.
