Re: Dumb question about solid lifter heads

I don't remember a clattering sound when I had a JH 8v scirocco. Sounds to me like you need to adjust the valves. Potterman told me - and lets see if I remember this correctly- that the engine revs easier if you go as loose as possible (within spec) on the exhaust side, and tight as possible on the intake side. That is, have the biggest gap possible (within spec) on the exhaust side, and smallest gap possible on intake side. I hope I didn't get that the wrong way around - best get a 2nd opinion, it's been a few years since I adjusted valves on a solid lifter head.

Are they supposed to clatter and clack? Mine sounds like a hydro head when
you first start it in the morning, except that it never quiets down. Is it
possible that I need to adjust the valve lash, or is it just the nature of
the beast?

BTW, I'm back on the street. Got the exhaust manifold off (not fun), got my
busted studs replaced, and got the new downpipe back on. Man, that made it
much quieter not having a big assed hole in the DP. Probably that's why I'm
hearing the lifters now :)
