RE: squeaky-ass steering column

Are we talking about a "squeak" or a "rattle" ? as I have a small rattle in
the steering and found the culprid after much investigation (bottom plastic
cap that holds the lower colum bearing in place broke and bearing came down
1/4" and permit steering column inside the steering column sleeve to vibrate
metal against metal)

My '87 16V started this about six months ago. I tried to remove the
steering column but could not get it off, even after removing every bolt,
clamp, and u-joint I could find. I am overlooking a fastener somewhere...I
just don't know where.
I, too, spray-lubed everything I could access, without success, before
re-assembling the unit.
It isn't my horn contact ring, since I replaced the stock wheel with a
MOMO unit/adapter since then and the creaky-ness (not a squeak, exactly,
more like a plastic-on-plastic rubbing/creak)remains, even after re-greasing
the contact ring. (That is a good idea, tho')
I can also feel a slight drag at the same time the creak sounds off. Mine
is most noticeable when it's warm, and occurs when the wheel is returning to
center after a right turn.

Solution? I'm at a loss. Sometimes I feel the source of the noise may be
in the rack or even in a strut. Other times I'm certain it lies in the
column itself. Let's just hope someone else has some experience with this
and can advise us.

Has anyone else had a problem with this?
