bloody old bits breaking...

Hi,
     I finally got tired of fighting to open the door on my little beast,
usually took several seconds of pushing, pulling and cursing.  I took the
handle off to see what was up.  Turns out the little Y-shaped doodad (note the
expert use of technical terms...;)) is cracked inside.  This would be the piece
that pushes the lever that actually releases the latch :(
     So, I can either live with the situation, start opening the driver's side
door from the passenger side or replace the bits at issue.  My question is, how
tough is it to transfer the lock mechanism from one door handle to a
replacement?  I really like having a single key do everything, so I'd rather
not replace the entire unit.  
     I appreciate any and all help with this.
