Wow, I am impressed... now that is a quick response... ;-)

Thanks a lot for this.  A lead at last... so far I've had nothing but
head-scratching from everyone I've asked!!

Sources point to: Bad hall-effect sensor in the distributor.  My ol' 16v had
the exact same symptoms before the sensor failed permanently.
