Re: [OT] need your experience - '88 Cabby

A Top is a big purchase, take it from me, mine exploded after the dry rotted
stitching let a little air into the header bow...Look at the condition of the
rubber all over the top, those pieces are expensive. Take it for a drive and
listen to where air comes in. If it's by the header bow, check for worn
rubber. Check under the hood where the scuttle drains are, make sure that
they're not blocked or rusted. Make sure the windshield is in good, the seal
can make for nasty rust problems. Also check the doors, and window glass
adjusters, since the windows don't have a frame, they can become loose from
people leaning on it, and also the doors can sag (lack of rigidity at the
roof, or lack thereof) Check the trunk for leaks, and always put the cover
over the top when you have it down....Will save you a lot of headaches. Also
make sure that it doesn't have one of those cheesy Stant Chrome Gas caps, get
a real VW ones, the other comes can get vaccumed on and stuck. To test for
major water leaks, take the car to a quarter car wash and pressure wash the
top. a little water si acceptable, but if your seat is soaked and water is
dripping off the headliner, you're in deep doo-doo
